Jarrad Noske has been a notable absentee from the Perth jockey ranks for the best part of the past two months, but that is about to change on Saturday as he makes his return in Broome.
Noske last rode at Belmont on June 9 and recorded two wins from as many rides.
He has since spent time in the north west of the state, and has eased his way back into the saddle riding trackwork for various trainers on the Pearl Coast.
Noske said although he had missed riding in races, the break would hold him in good stead for the new season.
“It’s been good, I’ve forgotten a bit what it’s like to ride,” Noske said.
“I came up here the next day after riding at Belmont and went up to Sophia Downs Station near Halls Creek just to do something different.
“I’ve been riding work up here in Broome for the last two weeks.”
As well as riding trackwork, Noske has also eased his way back into working on race day after he strapped for trainer Daniel Morton at Broome last Friday.
Noske said it wouldn’t be too much of an ask to get down to 61kg required to ride the in-form Desert Thorn in the Progressive Supplies Handicap (1200m) on Saturday.
“I checked last Wednesday and I was 63kg,” he said.
“Jim Enright then said to me that he will have Desert Thorn in on Saturday with 61kg and asked if I wanted to ride it because he didn’t want to claim off him.”
Noske said he planned to take rides during Broome Cup week.
“I would like to ride in Cup week on both Ladies Day and Cup Day,” he said.
“I will take as many as I can, but I won’t be riding light so I don’t expect too many rides.”
This Saturday is the first time Noske will ride at the Broome track, and looks a significant chance to make a winning return aboard Desert Thorn.
The gelding has recorded one win and four seconds from six starts this season in Broome, and Noske said he was looking forward to the opportunity to take the ride.
“His form looks good,” he said.
“He looks like he can race close to the speed, so hopefully he can show me the way around the track.”
The Kimberley Cup is the feature event at Broome on Saturday, with the meeting to get underway at 1.23pm.
